Specialty Print Finishes

Some printed pieces only need to deliver information. Others need to make an impression before a single word is read: the invitation that signals the event matters, the proposal cover a client keeps on the desk, the card people comment on. That impression comes from finish, the layer of craft on top of the ink.

KCA produces specialty print finishes at our Knoxville shop, and because the work happens in-house, you can hold finished samples before deciding where your budget does the most good.

The finish menu, in plain terms

Foil stamping lays metallic or pigmented foil onto the sheet for logos and type that catch light. Embossing and debossing press the paper itself into relief you can feel. Spot UV puts high gloss exactly where you want it, often over a matte field for contrast. Soft-touch lamination gives a piece a velvety surface people notice immediately. Die cutting shapes the sheet itself, from rounded corners to custom silhouettes.

Each works differently with different stocks, which is why we proof on the actual paper before committing a run.

Spend the effect where it pays

Restraint is what separates premium from gaudy. A foil logo on an otherwise quiet card outperforms a sheet covered in effects. We typically recommend one hero finish per piece, placed where the hand or eye lands first, and we'll be straight with you when a finish adds cost without adding impression.

Good candidates: business cards for client-facing roles, packaging for premium products, event invitations, proposal and report covers, and brand pieces meant to be kept.

Frequently Asked Questions About Specialty Finishes

  • How much do specialty finishes add to a job?

Finishes involve setup work like dies and plates, so the added cost depends on the effect, coverage area, and quantity. Setup costs amortize across larger runs. We'll quote the piece with and without the finish so you can see exactly what the upgrade buys.

  • Do finishes work on any paper?

No, and this is where jobs go wrong at shops that don't do the work themselves. Heavy uncoated stocks take embossing beautifully; spot UV wants a coated or laminated surface; foil behaves differently on textured sheets. We match finish to stock and proof the combination before the run.

  • Does a finished piece take longer to produce?

Add some time over standard printing for die and plate preparation and the extra press pass. It's days, not weeks, for most jobs, and we'll build the real schedule into your quote.

  • Can I see examples before committing?

Yes, and you should. Stop by our Knoxville shop and handle foil, emboss, spot UV, and soft-touch samples side by side. Choosing a finish from a photograph misses the entire point of the finish.
